$5 Monthly Citi Bike Membership for SNAP Recipients Will Increase Access To Citi Bike for Upwards of 1.8 Million Individuals
BROOKLYN, NY (July 17, 2018) – Healthfirst, the largest not-for-profit health insurance plan in New York City, is proud to announce that it has joined with New York City and Citi Bike to make its bike-sharing service more accessible than ever to New Yorkers. The program extends the $5.00 per month Citi Bike membership, previously available to NYCHA residents, to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) recipients too, expanding access to Citi Bike for more than 1.8 million New Yorkers.
The initiative was announced this morning at a press conference at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation on Fulton Street in Brooklyn. The press conference, which was followed by a ride to the nearby Healthfirst Community Office, included Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Assistant Commissioner K. Torian Easterling, Department of Social Services Executive Deputy Commissioner Gary Jenkins, and other community leaders.
“We are proud to support the expansion of Citi Bike among New Yorkers who can benefit most from affordable access to transportation,” said George Hulse, Vice President of Community Engagement.
“As we celebrate 25 years as a trusted partner to our members, providers and sponsor hospitals, this new partnership reaffirms our commitment to helping people live healthier lives — one person – and now one Citi Bike rider – at a time.”

Healthfirst was founded in 1993 as a not-for-profit corporation sponsored by New York’s leading hospitals. The plan works to meet its members’ diverse needs for quality and affordable care by aligning its goals and incentives with its partners who deliver care. This pioneering approach has spurred the plan’s growth and today, 1 in 8 New Yorkers use Healthfirst’s Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, and long-term care plans; qualified health plans; or individual or small group plans.
