Statement from Healthfirst on the Importance of Completing the 2020 U.S. Census

Sep 21, 2020

*Updated September 25, 2020 – Due to a court ruling, the deadline for responding the 2020 U.S. Census is now October 31, 2020

The following statement on the importance of a complete and accurate count for the 2020 U.S. Census, and the impact of such a count on healthcare, can be attributed to Pat Wang, President and Chief Executive Officer, Healthfirst.

The October 31* deadline for responding to the U.S. Census is around the corner, and Healthfirst urges all of its members and the communities it serves to complete the Census and be counted. This year has contained many disruptions and challenges that may have made the completion of the Census a lower priority for many people, but it is essential to raise that priority now before we run out of time to be included.

The Census is an essential part of determining what kinds of resources and programs, including those affecting health and wellness, are made available to communities. Examples of those programs include those that continue to support health insurance, housing, food, and other needs during COVID-19.

There are misunderstandings about how the Census affects foreign-born people. The Census is for all people, regardless of immigration status. The Census will NOT ask about citizenship status. Census responses are confidential and protected by U.S. law, and information provided on the Census cannot be used against individuals or their families.

Healthfirst strives to improve health outcomes in the neighborhoods we serve. This includes addressing healthcare disparities and ensuring access to the highest possible quality of care. In order for anyone to have the resources they need and deserve, everyone—including non-citizens—needs to be counted.

We urge all New York State residents to be counted by filling out the Census online at 2020census.gov, by calling 844-330-2020, or by completing and mailing back paper questionnaires you received in the mail—before the October 31* deadline.
